What to Wear for my Photo Session

As a photographer, a lot of my couples began to ask me those four words: “What should we wear?”

I’m definitely not a stylist.  These are just a few guidelines that I’ve picked up with my sessions.  There is really no right answer when it comes to what to wear.

CONFIDENT AND COMFORTABLE

During your session, you want to feel confident in what you have on.  If you choose clothes that are too tight or clingy, you’ll spend your whole session picking at them or covering up.

For the ladies, we recommend choosing pieces that flow nicely as you move, especially if you’re doing your photos outdoors.  Long, flowy fabrics bring lots of movement and photograph beautifully.

You don’t often get the opportunity to get all dressed up.  So when it comes to styling your session and choosing locations, don’t be afraid to use this moment as an opportunity to go overboard.

COORDINATE – BUT DON’T MATCH

Coordination doesn’t mean you have to wear matching outfits, but your look should come together.

Don’t wear the exact same colour. Do wear the same colour family, like a dark and a light of the same colour.

Consider light, neutral or pastel colours for light and airy photos, or bold colours for dark and moody photos.

Use layers and textures.  Fabrics like wool, denim, & satin have rich textures that look good when photographed.

THINK OF THE SEASON

During the fall months, I love warm, earthy tones that blend well with the scenery around. Small blankets are always a great idea as they add not only character to the session but warmth on chilly days without the large jackets.

CONSIDER PROFESSIONAL HAIR AND MAKE-UP

An engagement shoot is also the perfect time for your wedding hair and make-up trial.

Make sure you leave enough time before the shoot so you don’t feel rushed

WEAR HEELS BUT BRING your FLATS

While we love to photograph you with high heels, bring a good pair of flats for walking from location to location!  Your feet will thank you later.  This is also a good tip for your wedding day.

BEAUTIFUL FLORALS

We don’t mean floral dresses (though those can be a favourite as well).  Invest in a bouquet for your engagement session.  There is something so romantic and elegant, timeless, and luxurious about bringing a fresh bouquet to your engagement session.

DATE NIGHT

You already look fabulous with your hair and makeup all done.  Make your engagement shoot part of a girl’s night out, or even better, a date night.
